What happens when a person’s coming of age and coming of conscience develop within the context of religious and spiritual abuse and neglect? What is religious and spiritual abuse and neglect? How does a person learn to break free from the deeply internalized fear and shame born of such an upbringing to claim spiritual independence and a more authentic spiritual life? We shine a healing light on the dark side of religious experiences to help people identify and mend the spiritual wounds from this kind of coming of age and coming of conscience so they can heal and live spiritually abundant lives. The term “The Incarcerated Christian” is intended to convey a religious coming of age and coming of conscience that is analogous to imprisonment. Some Christians grow up in metaphorical religious cages that are confining, controlling, and/or cruel. Such an upbringing denies a person’s humanity. The more constrained, controlling, or cruel the experience, the deeper the wounding. The deeper the wounding, the more difficult the healing — if healing is achieved at all.
The good news: While fear can keep people locked in a religious prison, inner courage and loving guides can help release them so they can live in spiritual abundance and wellbeing.
